I’m moving to Honolulu, Oahu, Hawaii. I need advice and information. What are the ups / downs of Hawaii? Where are beautiful places to visit? What are the people and their culture like? Thanks! :)

Honolulu is really just a big city like anyplace else, however, there are many, many Asians. The North Shore is really cool, and the big market is fun to bum around (once). The beaches in Honolulu are really crowded because of the tourists, but you can get away to some less crowded places. And, of course, if you haven’t visited Pearl Harbor, you definitely should. One funny thing is McDonalds sereves Spam! It’s a big hit in the Islands!

have a great time. It’s like almost any where you go, no difference. And by the way Spam is not our favorite food don’t know why people say that. It’s not a Hawaiian thing, it’s more I’d say a local thing. More philipinos, Asians, and portugese eat spam than Hawaiians do. Don’t know why. I’d say Rice, and Fish are a big thing in Hawaii.

Go with a positive attitude, be respectful and you should be fine. We lived there for years and never had any problems with anyone. Whether it was at a beach mainly locals went to or a restaurant as well. We treated them with courtesy and respect and they in turn did the same. We made some great friends that will last a lifetime. Hawaii is mainly an Asian population but there is a big mixture of cultures in there as well. Using the bus system is great, makes it very easy to get places. It can be expensive but it depends on where you are coming from. The sales tax is less than 5% so that helps out sometimes. Look for bargains as well. the Aloha Stadium Flea Market is a great place, do the USS Arizona, USS Missouri, USS Bowfin as well. They have a new museum on Ford Island too. Then there is Polynesian Cultural Center, Bishop Museum, Iolani Palace, Punchbowl Cemetary, Diamond Head, North Shore, Dole Plantation, Pali Lookout, Waikiki Beach, and everything in between. Then there is the food, Yummy’s, Panda Express, Leonard’s Malasadas, Baldwin’s Shave Ice, Giovanni’s Shrimp, Young’s Ramen, ohh it is so good and so cheap.

well there are many ups and downs. i’d say, stay out of areas such as kalihi, kaimuki, waipahu, downtown, chinatown.
nothing against that, that’s just high crime areas, i lived in those areas, things are getting better, but at the same time there are many beautiful places.
waikiki beach is awesome, so is ala moana.
the hike up diamond head is phenominal.
    hanauma bay..
there are many ups and downs like any place
waikiki strip is like, our little slice of vegas :]

Wow, it’s pretty expensive to live in town.

You know, you can drive all around the island in one day.
Try go North Shore. Ko’olina and Lanikai are good beaches too. Eat shave ice, musubi, etc. :D Hawaii is awesome.

The people in Hawaii are a lot different than from on the mainland. Aloha spirit FTW!!!!! Mostly everyone in Hawaii is Asian. There is some racism against haoles and blacks but overall, everything’s a-okay.

Oh yeah Punahou Carnival is coming up! It’s like the only carnival here ever. lol.
