Best place for job and living area on the Big Island of Hawaii?

jessegray2002 asked:

I will be moving to the Big Island in October and I am trying to find the best place to live on the Big Island with the best chance to get a good job with a good living area. Please help me with any information that you may have about the area.

Ooohhh…if you love nature, you are going to love the Big Island. It’s beautiful there! I was raised there, and I have many fond memories of the Big Island. It is much less urbanized than Oahu, so you will have to do a bit of hunting to find some accomodation, but I am confident that you will find something quite suitable. The two main areas of the island where people move to are on the east side, Hilo, and to the west side, Kona. This is because these are the more developed parts of the island, so access to housing and jobs is much easier here than in the more rural parts of the island. Now, what you may want to consider is what type of natural environment you prefer, Hilo is quite charming, but it is on the wetter side of the island, where it rains rather frequently. The benefit of this is that it is very lush and green and fertile. In Hilo, you will have a very authentic experience of living in Hawaii. Kona is much drier, but there are more shops and restaurants there because that is where many cruise ships stop, and many newcomers to the Big Island live there. The beaches tend to be better than on the Hilo side. So, it all depends on what you are looking for. Wherever you move, you will need some kind of transportation because, while there is a bus system, it is not very extensive. Also, you will want to explore! Make sure you vist the Black sand beaches on the east side, and the green sand beach on the South Point, the central part of the island is also a wonderful place to visit, and you will get to expereicne the lifestyles of the Hawaiian paniolo (cowboy), not to mention Kilauea and Mauna Kea–the Big Island is the only island in the Hawaiian chain the has snow! If you have any other questions, feel free to ask! Good luck!
